Dermochelys coriacea
The largest turtle on Earth, reaching nearly three metres and the weight of a small car, the leatherback is named for the soft, ridged, leathery shell that sets it apart from all other sea turtles. Each year, females return under cover of darkness to the very beaches where they hatched, Levera chief among them, to dig and lay by moonlight. Witnessing a nesting leatherback, with a trained guide, is among the most moving experiences the island offers. We can arrange it in season.
