Nutmeg

Myristica fragrans

Nutmeg
Where to See It Gouyave nutmeg processing station, and estates across the parishes

No plant is more Grenadian than this. When the apricot-coloured fruit splits open it reveals one of nature's great surprises — a glossy brown seed wrapped in a lacy scarlet web. The seed becomes nutmeg, the red web becomes the spice mace, two spices from a single fruit. Grenada is among the world's leading producers. A visit to the nutmeg station at Gouyave, where pods are sorted and graded by hand, is a fragrant lesson in the island's history.
