Hibiscus rosa-sinensis

Hibiscus
Where to See It Garden hedges and grounds, in flower all year round

The quintessential tropical flower, a wide trumpet of scarlet, yellow or pink with a long central column that draws hummingbirds. Each bloom lasts only a day, yet the plant flowers tirelessly the year round. Beyond its beauty it is useful too, its relatives steeped across the islands into the tart, ruby-coloured drink known as sorrel at Christmas.
