Glossy and almost lacquered-looking, the anthurium holds out a heart-shaped spathe of red, pink or white, with a curving cream spike at its centre. It thrives in the shade and is a star of the island's cut-flower trade and Sunday church arrangements. Long-lasting and quietly exotic.
