Antillean Crested Hummingbird

Orthorhyncus cristatus

Antillean Crested Hummingbird
Where to See It Garden flowers and grounds island-wide, especially Annandale

A jewel barely three inches long, the male wears a tiny upswept crest that flares emerald and sapphire when the light catches it. It hovers at hibiscus and heliconia with a wingbeat too fast to follow, and defends a favourite shrub with surprising bravado. Sit still near a blooming garden, and one will likely come to inspect you.
