Cercopithecus mona
Grenada's only monkey is not originally Grenadian at all. The mona monkey was brought from West Africa aboard ships during the eighteenth century, and has thrived in the central rainforest ever since. Handsome and quick, with a chestnut back, a pale rump and a dark mask across blue-grey skin, it carries food in cheek pouches like a built-in shopping bag. Around Grand Etang they have grown bold with visitors — enjoy them, photograph them, but please do not feed or touch them.
