Red Ginger

Alpinia purpurata

Red Ginger
Where to See It Gardens, hotel grounds and roadside plots island-wide

A favourite of Grenadian gardens and florists, red ginger sends up tall stems topped with a bright cone of waxy bracts in scarlet or shocking pink. As with so many tropical flowers, the colour is not the petals at all but modified leaves, the true small flowers tucked within. It blooms for months and lasts beautifully once cut.
