Sea Grape

Coccoloba uvifera

Sea Grape
Where to See It Beaches and coastal edges island-wide

The friendly tree of the beach, the sea grape spreads low and wide above the sand, offering welcome shade beneath its round, leathery leaves. In late summer it hangs clusters of green grapes that ripen to purple, edible and tart, and good as a jelly. Quietly, its roots also hold the dunes together against the sea.
